A library centred on communication
Speech and language therapy brings together questions requiring different materials: foundations, assessment, research and intervention. A useful first step is to decide whether you need to learn a concept, understand a tool or examine a published study.
Organise reading by the function studied and the life stage addressed. Material about childhood language development does not necessarily answer questions about communication following a brain injury.
Language development and aphasia
The NIDCD describes developmental language disorder as a difficulty affecting learning, understanding and using language. Its resource introduces the vocabulary before you approach more technical publications.
The same institute describes aphasia as a language disorder associated with brain damage. Comparing these resources shows why it is important to identify the origin and context of a difficulty rather than grouping all communication problems under one label.
What to check in a therapy resource
- Audience: identify whether it addresses students, professionals or families and which knowledge it assumes.
- Population: check the age, language and context of the people described.
- Tools: examine how their use is explained and which limitations the author acknowledges.
- Outcomes: distinguish changes in a specific task from their relationship to everyday communication.
An engaging activity is not the same as a validated tool. Keep the original reference when preparing study materials or an academic presentation.
Turn reading into useful questions
Record the concept, study group, tool and an unanswered question. If a paper uses an unfamiliar term, find its definition before summarising the results. This reduces errors when comparing studies with similar vocabulary.
Explore neurosciences and language for a wider perspective, or medical publications for help choosing textbooks and articles. This page does not offer diagnostic tests or personalised exercises.
